Candida Torre got into an accident in June 2015. Her car, a 2009 Nissan Cube was so badly damaged, that the Automobile Club of Southern California declared it a total loss. But that car had a story behind. It had belonged to her son, who was in the Army and was killed some years ago while serving in Iraq.
Her 21-year-old son, Army Spc. Jose Torre Jr, died in 2011 and left behind his beloved car. His 2009 Nissan Cube had been the first car he had bought, and he had been saving for some years before he was finally able to get it. The Washington Beach Police Officer who took care of her case was John Baggs, and he noticed a gold star on the license plate of the car right away. He knew what it represented: that the person had lost a family member who was serving in the military.
And Officer Baggs had experience the same at some point, since his father died in the Vietnam War. He felt like he should do something for that woman and listened to her story.
And even though Candida's car had been declared a total loss, he thought that with some hard work, he could help bring it back to life.
So he hired auto professionals who helped him restore the car. He didn't tell Candida about his little project and decided to surprise her at the Veteran's Day Gold Star event with a car that looked like it was brand new!
